John Harrison Life & Inventions Set

The John Harrison: Life & Inventions Mint Set brings together six Isle of Man stamps exploring the life and achievements of the remarkable self-taught clockmaker and inventor. Each design highlights an important element of the story, from the navigational challenges of Harrison’s age to the clocks and timekeepers that transformed maritime navigation.

The stamps feature a 17th century French cannon associated with the 1707 wreck of HMS Association, a portrait of John Harrison, his H1 marine timekeeper, a replica of his 1713 wooden clock, his 1726 wooden regulator and a terrestrial table globe dating from around 1640.

Together, the designs trace Harrison’s journey from early clockmaking and mechanical innovation to his determination to solve the longitude problem. His work on friction reduction, temperature compensation and precision timekeeping ultimately led to marine chronometers capable of maintaining accurate time at sea.

Marking the 250th anniversary of Harrison’s death, this six-stamp set provides a fascinating introduction to an inventor whose practical ingenuity changed navigation and contributed to safer long-distance travel, global trade and exploration.
