This limited-edition model was created in his honour by Lamborghini in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the brand and serves as a lasting tribute to an automotive great.
Valentino Balboni is one of the most respected figures in the automotive world and is widely regarded as a legend within Lamborghini. Born in Italy, Balboni joined Lamborghini in 1968 as a mechanic and apprentice. At the time, the company was still young and he quickly became involved in the development and testing of its emerging high-performance sports cars.
Through dedication, skill and an exceptional understanding of vehicle dynamics, Balboni rose through the ranks to become Lamborghini’s chief test driver. Over a career spanning more than four decades he played a crucial role in the development of nearly every major Lamborghini model. His feedback helped engineers refine the handling, performance and driving characteristics of many of the brands most iconic cars such as the Countach, Diablo, Murciélago, and Gallardo.
Balboni became known for his remarkable driving ability and his preference for rear-wheel-drive vehicles, believing they provided a more engaging and authentic driving experience. His influence on Lamborghini’s engineering philosophy was significant, as he consistently advocated for cars that delivered both performance and driver involvement.
In recognition of his contributions, Lamborghini introduced a special edition model in 2009: the Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni. This limited-production car was named in his honour and featured rear-wheel drive, reflecting his personal preferences and driving philosophy. It remains one of the most celebrated special editions in Lamborghini’s history.
After retiring as chief test driver in 2008, Balboni continued to serve as a brand ambassador, representing Lamborghini at events around the world and sharing his extensive knowledge of the company’s heritage. His passion, expertise, and commitment helped shape Lamborghini’s reputation for producing some of the world’s most exciting supercars. Today, Valentino Balboni remains an enduring symbol of the brand and a highly respected figure among automotive enthusiasts worldwide.
Issued on 24th June 2026, the Valentino Balboni Signature Collection is released alongside the Petrolheadonism – Supercar Island collection, available online now at iomstamps.com/collections/PTRLHDNSM.
