Racing Legend John McGuinness MBE Celebrated through Isle of Man stamps

Isle of Man Stamps & Coins is proud to launch this set of six stamps honouring one of motorcycle racing’s most enduring and celebrated figures, John McGuinness MBE. The collection marks a remarkable milestone of 30 years since McGuinness first competed at the Isle of Man TT races. Widely regarded as one of the greatest road racers of all time, McGuinness has become synonymous with the TT, achieving legendary status through his skill, determination, and longevity in one of the world’s most demanding motorsport events. This special issue pays tribute to his extraordinary career, with a strong focus on his achievements at the TT, where he has secured an impressive 23 victories and countless podium finishes. Created in partnership with John himself, this release features thrilling imagery from Pacemaker Press and Dave Kneen Photography, capturing the visceral excitement of road racing throughout John’s career.  Beyond the Isle of Man, the collection also highlights McGuinness’s accomplishments at two of the other prestigious road racing events. Two stamps are dedicated to the North West 200, one of the fastest road races in the world, where McGuinness has enjoyed multiple victories and demonstrated his prowess on high-speed circuits. The remaining two stamps celebrate his performances at the Macau Grand Prix, a notoriously challenging street circuit that demands precision and courage.  Discussing the stamps, John McGuinness MBE writes: “The Isle of Man is a beautiful Island and racing the Mountain course is a massive challenge. There are highs and lows but it is something that I have loved every moment of.  The TT is about so much more than the racing though. Meeting friends, old and new, and having the craic with the rest of the paddock and the fans is all part of the fun. I have met so many wonderful people over the past 30 years and received so much love and affection. I am very grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way during my TT journey. That journey isn’t over yet but it feels great to have these stamps to mark the 30th milestone. 70th Anniversary of EUROPA Stamps marked by Isle of Man Post Office

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of EUROPA stamps and the 50th anniversary of Isle of Man EUROPA stamps, we are delighted to share this special issue cataloguing our Island’s postal history and a significant milestone in thematic philatelic collecting. 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the first EUROPA stamps, an initiative that has become one of the longest-running and most successful joint philatelic projects in the world. First released in 1956 under the auspices of the six founding members of the European postal community, the EUROPA stamp program was created to symbolise cooperation, unity and shared cultural identity across the continent. Over seven decades it has evolved into a powerful emblem of European collaboration, carried on millions of letters and treasured in countless philatelic collections.The origins of the EUROPA stamp lie with the early visionaries of European integration, working through the postal organisation that would later become PostEurop. At a time when Europe was rebuilding and redefining itself after the devastation of war, a common stamp design bearing the word “EUROPA” provided a visible symbol of solidarity. The early issues shared a common design theme across participating countries, reinforcing the idea of unity through sovereignty and visual consistency. As the program evolved it shifted to common thematic issues, allowing each country to interpret an agreed annual theme through its own artistic lens. Throughout the decades, EUROPA themes have celebrated Europe’s architectural heritage, natural landscapes, scientific achievements, cultural traditions and shared values. By encouraging postal administrations to highlight aspects of their national identity within a broader European context, the EUROPA program has fostered mutual understanding and cultural exchange. Collectors worldwide recognise EUROPA stamps not only for their artistic merit but also for their historic and symbolic significance.The 2026 EUROPA 70th anniversary common design is the work of visual artist Klaus Welp in collaboration with Tommi Kantola, Design Manager at Posti. The Laxey Jug stamp from the original collection is shared through this special 50th anniversary release.  Since 1976, Isle of Man Post Office has continued to issue EUROPA stamps year-on-year, releasing over 100 individual stamps throughout this period. Such designs can be viewed throughout this special collection:Laxey Jug, 1976: This commemorative jug was presented to Richard Rowe, Captain of the Laxey Mines on the opening of the Laxey Wheel in 1854. Isle of Man Postman, 1990: This issue details the history of Isle of Man Post Office and its buildings across the Island. This stamp displays an assistant postman wearing his uniform from the era. Ballaglass Glen Cottage, 1999: Manx cottages or ‘tholtans’ are often hidden in remote areas of natural beauty. 250th Anniversary of the American War of Independence Commemorated through Stamp Issue

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to unveil this collection of stamps marking 250 years since the American Declaration of Independence. This stamp collection honours six remarkable figures whose lives bridged the Island and the emerging United States. Their stories reveal connections of courage, trade, politics, and ideals that linked Manx shores to America’s revolutionary cause.Developed in collaboration with Manx historian Matthew Richardson, the collection uncovers and celebrates the often-overlooked stories linking the Isle of Man to the War of Independence. Through meticulous research, Matthew Richardson has brought to life the roles, influences, and experiences of Manx individuals during this transformative period in the late 18th century.Fighting between Britain and her American colonies began in 1775, and the earliest impact of the war upon the Isle of Man was the sudden arrival of armed press gangs, both off the coast and in the Island’s harbours and taverns. Manx sailors, merchants, and migrants were connected to the transatlantic world in which the war unfolded. The Island’s strong seafaring tradition meant that Manx men served aboard British vessels and merchant ships operating in American waters, while trade routes linking the British Isles to the American colonies brought the effects of the conflict closer to home. Matthew Richardson explains “The Declaration of Independence of 1776 was a pivotal moment in the history of both America and Britain. Though each nation charted a very different course thereafter in terms of constitution, legal and political system, and economy, for better or worse we are still after 250 years linked by bonds of shared history and common language. This stamp issue reflects the role the Isle of Man played in those turbulent times, and it has been a great honour for me to be involved in its production.”The collection highlights the stories of Hugh Crow, Captain John Paul Jones, Mark Wilks, Sir George Moore, Vice Admiral William Bligh and Major Paul Crebbin, all of whom share distinct links to Manx shores as highlighted through Matthew Richardson’s fascinating accompanying text. Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style - A postal tribute celebrating the Fashion Legacy of Her Majesty on the centenary of her birth

Isle of Man Post Office is proud to announce the release of a new set of six commemorative stamps entitled Fashion Legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. Issued on 21st April to mark the centenary of the birth of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, this beautifully curated collection celebrates the enduring style, elegance and cultural influence of one of the most recognisable figures in modern history. Developed in collaboration with Royal Collection Trust in partnership with its landmark exhibition, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style, the stamp issue offers a unique philatelic tribute to the late monarch’s legacy. Each stamp captures a distinct moment from across Her Majesty’s reign, highlighting the evolution of her style from her early years as a young princess through to her role as a global icon of fashion. The collection showcases a selection of carefully chosen images drawn principally from the Royal Collection, reflecting both the personal and public significance of the Queen’s wardrobe. From exquisitely detailed gowns worn at state occasions to the vibrant, instantly recognisable ensembles that became her hallmark in later years, the stamps illustrate how fashion played a vital role in shaping the Queen’s public identity and connection with people around the world. The set is accompanied by a range of limited-edition collectables including a First Day Cover and Presentation Pack, featuring commentary by Austin Mutti-Mewse, author and former curator at House of Hardy Amies, Savile Row. The collection is completed by a landmark release stamp sheet folder issued in partnership with a number of the British Overseas Territories. Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion archive is one of the largest and most important surviving collections of 20th-century British fashion and now forms part of the Royal Collection.   Through approximately 200 items, around half on display for the first time, the exhibition charts the remarkable story of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch through clothing worn in all ten decades of her life.   Selected in collaboration with Royal Collection Trust, this stamp issue highlights the following items from the exhibition, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style: -       Harris Tweed Jacket and Balmoral Tartan Skirt: The jacket was designed by British couturier Norman Hartnell with a reference to Christian Dior’s Bar jacket and Princess Elizabeth also wears a Balmoral Tartan skirt. -       Auxiliary Territorial Service Uniform: Princess Elizabeth was the first female member of the Royal Family to serve in the armed forces as a full-time active member, trained as a driver and mechanic. -       The Coronation Dress: An iconic British image, the 1953 Coronation Dress, designed by Hartnell. It features the floral emblems of the four nations of the UK and emblems of the Commonwealth nations at the time in its design. -       Dress and Bolero Jacket: Worn to Princess Margaret’s wedding in 1960, this Norman Hartnell outfit is known for its timeless elegance. Trevor Hemmings’ Racing Legacy Celebrated in new Isle of Man Post Office Stamp Collection

Isle of Man Post Office has unveiled a special stamp collection honouring the life and remarkable legacy of Trevor Hemmings CVO (1935 – 2021). A proud Island resident, Trevor became one of the most respected racehorse owners of modern times.  Trevor was a highly successful businessman who went on to become one of the most recognised figures in horse racing, with his racing colours becoming synonymous with some of the most renowned horses and jockeys in British and Irish horse racing.  This collection features remarkable imagery by Grossick Photography, complemented by insightful and endearing text from Kathryn Revitt, a Trustee of the Hemmings Family Trust. It captures the warmth and spirit of a man whose dedication to racing was a true inspiration to many. The stamps are released in support of The Injured Jockey’s Fund.  Trevor’s place among racing’s elite was secured when he became the first owner to achieve three Grand National wins with three different horses, ensuring that both his name and his famous green, white and yellow silks will be forever synonymous with Aintree, home of the Grand National.  He initially became involved with horse racing while working for Sir Fred Pontin, whose horse Specify won the Grand National in 1971. Sir Fred would often joke that he would leave Trevor his trophy when he died. As it turned out, Sir Fred held true to his promise, but this only fired up Trevor’s ambition to win the famous race with one of his own horses.  That dream became reality when in 2005, Hedgehunter was victorious under Ruby Walsh. Ballabriggs triumphed in 2011 when ridden by Jason Maguire and this was followed by the historic third Grand National win in 2015 when Many Clouds won with Leighton Aspell aboard.  The Hemmings silks have also been carried to great success at the Cheltenham Festival, at which 12 wins have been recorded, and other major staying chases have been landed, including the Hennessy Gold Cup, Scottish Grand National, and the Midlands Grand National.  Outside of racing, Trevor Hemmings was a keen supporter of other forms of equestrianism. At the London Olympics in 2012 Zara Tindall rode his horse High Kingdom, winning a silver medal as part of the British eventing team. We are very grateful to The Jockey Club, Grossick Photography, Kathryn Revitt and the Hemmings family for their generous support and assistance in bringing this tribute together.  As part of this stamp collection, well-known figures from the world of horse racing, equestrianism and broadcasting have offered their personal memories of Trevor Hemmings.  Clare Balding, Broadcaster Trevor loved his horses. That shone through more than anything in the way he cared for them after they retired. Winning the Grand National was always a dream for him and to do it with three different horses was the ultimate achievement. He would always wear his cloth cap even under a top hat at Royal Ascot and he never forgot his roots as a working-class lad from Lancashire. He gave back so much to the community and to families who needed help and he had the kindest heart.  Trevor was also an extraordinary businessman, a believer in the integrity of sporting competition, and an absolute diamond.  Sir AP McCoy, former Champion Jockey & President of The Injured Jockeys Fund I was so lucky to get to know him, spend time with him, and ride a lot of his horses throughout most of my career. Most notably, Albertas Run, who I won 10 races, including 3 times at the Cheltenham Festival. Trevor was like all of us. He loved winning, and by God he won a lot, which he thoroughly deserved. He was a great supporter of horse racing, but he was also a very kind and generous man.  I am President of the Injured Jockeys Fund, and I know personally what a huge contributor he had been for many years to our charity, especially when we were building one of our rehabilitation centres, Jack Berry house, which wouldn’t exist without Trevor's generosity. Lastly, I would say his greatest gift was the most charming way he had of making you feel at ease.  Willie Mullins, Champion Trainer in Ireland and England Trevor had a deep and genuine love for racing, and he always believed in his horses. Hedgehunter’s Grand National victory meant a great deal to him, and seeing that belief rewarded on such a famous day was something very special. Trevor was proud of the sport and of those involved in it, and it was a privilege to have shared that moment with him. It is a memory that has stayed with us all.  Dickon White, Regional Director North West at The Jockey Club It has been a privilege to support Isle of Man Post Office on this very special project honouring Trevor Hemmings. Trevor was not only a remarkable man, but someone whose achievements and values left a lasting mark on the sport.  His unique place in Grand National history, winning the race three times with three different horses, is extraordinary, and yet it was his love of racing and respect for everyone involved that truly defined him.  This stamp collection is a fitting tribute to a proud Island resident and a great racing man, and we are honoured to have played a very small part in celebrating his remarkable legacy.  Zara Tindall MBE, Olympic Medallist and former Eventing World Champion Trevor was the most special man in many ways and one of the hardest working people I have known. He had an incredible sense of humour and was a cheeky chap! But his love of horses was where I got lucky. I managed to persuade him to have some horses in eventing. We had so much fun in the racing and eventing world with some great horses. With his incredible support, we managed to get to the Olympics in London in 2012 with High Kingdom and win a team silver medal. His enjoyment of being successful at the highest levels made him such an honour to ride for.   Trevor was always extremely understanding with the highs and lows of the sport of horses and ever the competitive gentleman. It was always so easy to be in his company. He was never without his cloth cap and a twinkle in his eye!  Released on 7th April 2026, the Trevor J. Astronaut and Aquanaut Nicole Stott collection of Manx Stamps released

Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to release this collection of stamps showcasing our planet and our place in space, curated by Astronaut and Aquanaut Nicole Stott. Nicole Stott is a retired NASA astronaut and aquanaut who logged 104 days in space across two missions and performed a spacewalk. She painted the first watercolour in space and is the first person to have spoken Manx in space. From the Oceans to the Stars is a collection of essays by Nicole studying our planet and our place in space and the wider universe. Each stamp features striking imagery and has been carefully selected by Nicole to represent a journey, starting with life in the deepest part of our oceans, up through the seas around the Isle of Man, into space, looking back at Earth from the International Space Station, then looking out to far away galaxies.Nicole explains: To me, there’s no better Island home to consider than the Isle of Man. My husband was born and raised there, and I consider myself an honorary Manxwoman. I’m in awe of the beauty of the Island, its rare and rich history, the people, and their respect for the nature of their Island home, a UNESCO Biosphere. The Isle of Man presents us with a wonderful way to consider our place in space – from the depths of the sea that surround it and the coastal and ocean life that thrives in its waters. Zodiac Year of the Horse celebrated for the first time through Isle of Man Stamp Issue

Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) is delighted to share this issue created alongside esteemed engraving artist Martin Mörck continuing our Chinese Lunar New Year series.  Each stamp has been meticulously crafted by Martin, sharing elements of the fire Horse’s rich zodiac symbolism: strength, independence, vitality and success. For thousands of years, the horse has galloped through the heart of Chinese art, poetry, and philosophy. Those born under its influence traditionally thought to be intelligent and ambitious. History of Manx Brewing celebrated in new collection of stamps by Isle of Man Post Office

Isle of Man Stamps and Coins is delighted to announce the release of a brand-new set of eight stamps titled Brewed on Mann, celebrating the proud brewing heritage of the Isle of Man. This special collection explores the fascinating history of beer-making on the Island, from its early records to the vibrant brewing culture enjoyed today.   The Isle of Man has a rich and distinctive brewing history shaped by tradition and a strong sense of identity. Brewing on the Isle of Man can be traced back to the early medieval period, when beer was originally brewed in households and monasteries using locally grown barley. By the 18th and 19th centuries, brewing had become more commercialised as the Island developed as a centre of trade and tourism.   Adulterated beer was a widespread problem in the 1800s so The Brewers Act (otherwise known as the Manx Pure Beer Act) - was introduced by Tynwald, initially in 1827 and updated in 1874. It mandates that beer be brewed using only water, malt, hops, and yeast. The Act remains a unique and enduring piece of legislation still enforced to this day.   The issue also shines a spotlight on significant anniversaries in Manx brewing: 175 years of Okell’s Brewery, founded in 1850 by Dr. William Okell, whose pioneering work in establishing brewing standards shaped the quality and reputation of beer across the Island.   Ollie Neale, Okell’s Brewery Managing Director commented:  “Celebrating 175 years is a significant milestone and this special stamp collection, created in conjunction with Isle of Man Post Office, is a fitting tribute to our heritage and the generations who’ve shaped our story and made Okell’s what it is today. Isle of Man Post Office unveil Crank Up Christmas Stamps Designed by UCM students and alumni

                        Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) and University College Isle of Man (UCM) are proud to unveil Crank Up Christmas, the 2025 Christmas stamp collection and wider IOMPO Christmas campaign. A heart-warming and festive series designed by students and alumni. This special issue is part of UCM’s milestone celebrations, marking over 145 years since the founding of the Douglas School of Art and 50 years of the Homefield Road Campus.  When approached by UCM to consider a set of stamps for their landmark anniversaries the team at Stamps & Coins viewed this as a wonderful opportunity to work with creatives of the future to bring together a set of six designs to reflect and embrace their wide range of talents and abilities. Our aim was to encourage this group of young people to think about their take on Christmas through engagement with each faculty at UCM. When presented with their storyboard in January 2025 it was clear they had given a tremendous amount of thought, including subtle messaging, within their draft designs.  The students were divided into teams and each given a brief; to portray Manx festive heritage and the evolution of Christmas traditions on the Isle of Man. The students conducted research and brainstormed ways through which they could include reference to each faculty at UCM as a means of representing all students in the project. The culmination of the project captures the spirit of Manx Christmas traditions through a vibrant mix of illustration styles, reflecting the creativity and talent nurtured at UCM. Each stamp tells a unique story - from Manx traditions such as The White Boys play and First Footing, to modern day occasions depicted through the Christmas light switch on and the annual Santa’s on a Bike fundraiser. This collaboration between UCM and IOMPO is a celebration of community, creativity and heritage. It provided students with a rare opportunity to contribute to a national philatelic release, gaining real-world experience and exposure for their work. The project also fulfilled the criteria for one of their modules. Izabela (Rue) Garczynska, who worked on the stamp featuring The White Boys play, said: “It was such a fantastic experience to work on the design of the stamps. To be able to deliver a real project that will be seen by thousands of people over the festive season, have my work approved by The King, and work closely with industry has been really valuable for my development and my portfolio. Thank you to Maxine and her team for giving us this opportunity.” Maxine Cannon, General Manager of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins, said: "It was my pleasure to meet with the students, lecturers and alumni at UCM in May 2025 to follow their journey on this project and to hear first-hand their hopes and aspirations for our Christmas collection. These stamps will be the most widely used of all designs issued in 2025, and it is for that reason we wanted creatives of the future to have the opportunity to share their thoughts and hopes with a global audience. During my visit I stopped to think about their positivity towards the postage stamp, its purpose and its place in the modern world. I explained to them that their class would be forever associated with the IOMPO 2025 Crank Up Christmas issue. Their designs will be housed in the Royal Philatelic Collection, The British Library and reference books detailing our new issues since 1973. It is a wonderful way to celebrate UCM’s legacy and the next generation of Island creatives." The project was coordinated as part of UCM’s year-long milestone programme, which has included exhibitions, alumni showcases and community events. The stamps were designed by ten Creative Media students, under the tutorage of Lecturers Ewan MacFarlane, Aimee Rode, Colin Cunliffe, Sonya Quayle and Gemma Sayle. Jesamine Kelly, UCM’s Principal, commented: “It’s been fantastic to see how the students have been thoroughly engaged in the project, giving them real-world experience, working with clients and developing fantastic teamwork and communication skills. This collaboration is a perfect example of how UCM connects education with the wider community. Isle of Man Stamps & Coins Celebrates Rick Wakeman with a Landmark Six-Stamp Collection Featuring the Visionary Artwork of Roger Dean

Two giants of progressive rock have come together in a landmark collection of six stamps celebrating the legendary keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman, brought to life through the visionary artwork of Roger Dean.                              From his spellbinding solos with YES to epic concept albums like The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Rick Wakeman has been pushing musical boundaries for over five decades. Now, fans can see his world re-imagined through the works of visionary artist Roger Dean, whose fantasy landscapes have become synonymous with progressive rock and are heavily featured throughout this new range of collectables.  Across more than 100 solo albums, Wakeman has explored everything from classical piano interpretations to full symphonic rock, building a catalogue as diverse as it is daring. His music has reached audiences worldwide, not only through records and concerts but also through his many appearances on television and radio, where his wit and storytelling make him as engaging off stage as on.  This unique collaboration brings together two cultural giants whose creative journeys have shaped the visual and sonic worlds of progressive music for more than five decades. Each of the six stamps features a carefully selected Dean illustration, capturing the otherworldly spirit and imagination that Wakeman’s music evokes.  Rick moved to the Isle of Man in 1987, writing, composing and performing from his converted coach house studio. He recorded prolifically there for more than a decade, including initial recordings of Return to the Centre of the Earth and the new age Aspirant Trilogy. His time on the Island also inspired a deeply personal work: The Heritage Suite. This solo piano album celebrates local landmarks — from St Michael’s Isle to Spanish Head — produced in association with Manx National Heritage.  Rick Wakeman CBE, FRCM, PROF (HON LCM), FGMS commented: “I am honoured to have my career featured on these stamps having spent many years as a resident of the Isle of Man. Battle of Britain and Manx Aviation Military Museum Anniversaries marked through new Stamp Collection

                                            Six stamps study the Manx Aviation and Military Museum during its 25th anniversary, issued alongside a commemorative sheetlet of stamps honouring the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.Founded in 2000 by a group of aviation and military history enthusiasts in the Isle of Man, the museum is run entirely by volunteers and has grown in size and reputation, becoming a very popular and highly regarded facility for the casual visitor or the serious researcher.The museum encompasses not only the history of Manx aviation but also the roles that the Island and its people played in both world wars. Particularly notable is the way the museum features the stories of individual people who, reluctantly or otherwise, went to war - giving a rare insight into how ordinary men and women felt and acted while doing their duty.For a quarter of a century the museum has preserved and shared the stories of the Isle of Man’s rich aviation and military past. From its location near Ronaldsway Airport, it offers visitors a journey through Manx history. The six stamps detail some of the museum’s main exhibits;  World War I, World War II,  VJ Day, Civil Aviation, museum artefacts and The Korean War.A commemorative sheetlet marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be released on 15th September. History of Manx Coins studied in landmark stamp issue

The Orrysdale Collection was meticulously compiled by Dr John Frissell Crellin MRCS MHK 1816-1886. The eldest son of John Christian Crellin, of Orrysdale and Catherine Quayle, of Castletown, and was educated at King William's College. He studied medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He inherited the property at Orrysdale and practiced medicine locally on the Island. Dr Crellin was appointed to the House of Keys in 1843. He became Dr Charles Clay's on-Island collaborator for his book on the Currency of the Isle of Man published as Manx Society volume 17 in 1869.  Along with Dr Clay they are regarded as the founding fathers of Manx numismatics.  Crellin had a significant collection of coins, tokens and card money, all shared throughout the Prestige Booklet – a 28 page study of the collection and history of Manx numismatics.  The Collection has been passed down through the family virtually intact. Before the Collection was dispersed the executors allowed all 1715 examples to be fully catalogued, providing the most detailed and extensive numismatics known on the Island.  Maxine Cannon, General Manager of Stamps and Coins at Isle of Man Post Office, said: "We are proud to present this unique six-stamp collection celebrating the rich numismatic history of the Isle of Man. Eight Stamps Issued by Isle of Man Post Office to Celebrate the Life and Career of Maurice Gibb CBE

On Thursday 29th February, the life and career of Maurice Gibb CBE, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer will be celebrated by Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) with a set of eight postage stamps featuring images from one of the most accomplished and sought-after music photographers in the world, Guido Karp.

St Mary’s Catholic Church

The origins of St Mary’s go back to 1764, when a French Benedictine monk and botanist named Dom Antoine Pernetty came with the earliest settlers at Port Louis. Dom Antoine screened off part of the dining room in the main building at Port Louis and used it as a chapel. Later, under the Spanish administration that began in 1767, a temporary chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (Our Lady of Solitude) was built. This was replaced with a more permanent stone-and-brick building that was consecrated in 1801.  In 1844 the settlers moved from Port Louis to Stanley, which on Friday, 18th July 1845, became the capital.  The Irish Chaplains & Fr Foran (1856-1887)  In the 1850s the Colonial Manager of the Falkland Islands Company, Thomas Havers, a Catholic, rented a house in Stanley, where he held Sunday services and gave religious instruction.  In response to Mr Havers’ request to Cardinal Wiseman and to Rome for English-speaking priests, Irish chaplains would visit the Islands on temporary missions. St Mary’s Church was eventually built at Pump Green and was used from Sunday, the 15th of June 1873.  Fr James Foran, a priest of Hexham & Newcastle, served in the Islands from 1875 to 1886. In 1885, Fr Foran and the parishioners of St Mary’s decided to build a new church on a site they had secured in 1857 “on the front road”.  The first Holy Mass was celebrated on Sunday, 28th February 1886.  In 1899, the present church was built adjacent to it. This building was a prefabricated church, ordered from Boulton & Paul, Ltd, of Norwich, England, and assembled from a kit. The church was erected in Stanley, with William Biggs playing a major role in the construction. The earlier church building became the parish hall and is now used by the local school for classrooms.  The Salesian Fathers (1888-1952) & The Mill Hill Missionaries (1952-2002)  In 1888, Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands were made into a separate Apostolic Prefecture and entrusted to the Salesians of Don Bosco. The Salesians served the Catholic community in the Islands for 64 years.  In 1952, the Falkland Islands were erected as an Apostolic Prefecture and entrusted to the Mill Hill Missionaries.  Monsignor James Ireland MHM was named as the first Prefect Apostolic and served from 1952 to 1973.  In 1967, under the then Parish Priest, Fr Rudolf Roël, the church underwent extensive remodelling. The interior walls were covered with varnished Gaboon plywood panels. The painting of the Last Supper was moved from the East wall (above the altar) to the west wall, in front of the choir loft. Parishioner Willie Bowles constructed a freestanding altar and a new altar rail, as well as the new porch.  During this renovation, two windows on the East side of the building were uncovered. In 1984, the stained glass from a demolished church in Southampton was presented to St Mary’s by the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, through the London Stained Glass Repository.  This stained glass was installed over the East windows in St Mary’s Church. They depict the Annunciation, an Angel, and the Women at the Tomb. The stained glass was designed by Henry Holliday in about 1909-1913.  Mgr Daniel Spraggon MHM, served, as the second Prefect, from 1973 until his untimely death in 1985. He was in Stanley during the 1982 conflict. During his time, a new confessional was built.  Mgr Spraggon’s successor, Dr Anton Agreiter MHM, arrived in December 1986 and ministered in the South Atlantic until his retirement in 2002.  In the early 1990s, the sanctuary was once again extensively remodelled. The altar rails and the statue of the Sacred Heart were removed.  Mgr Agreiter installed a new altar with a carving of the Good Shepherd, as well as a new crucifix and a new statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, both ordered from Mgr Agreiter’s native South Tyrol. The pews, pulpit, and tabernacle were also replaced.  The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales (2002 -   )  Early in 2001, the Catholic community in the Falkland Islands was entrusted to the pastoral care of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.  Mgr Michael Bernard McPartland SMA, was the fourth Prefect Apostolic of the Falkland Islands from 2002 to 2016.  On the 26th of October in 2016, Abbot Hugh Allan, O.Praem., was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Falkland Islands. Since the appointment of Fr Ambrose Bennett, OSB, as Parish Priest, St Mary’s has seen some rearrangement of the sanctuary: the old tabernacle, the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the images of St Joseph and St Patrick were returned to their former locations.  Text by Fr.
